Purpose: Deep Water

Updated: May 2, 2023

Proverbs 20:5

ESV

The purpose in a man's heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.

With the continual spring rain that is synonymous with the state of Washington, water is at the top of my mind. When I think of deep water, however, I really think of the levels of the ocean.

Deep ocean

What you learn in science is that there are several zones.

Ocean Zones

At the top is the sunlight zone, then twilight, then midnight, the abyss, and finally the trenches. I can see how God compares our purpose to this. The sunlight zone is the purpose at the top of our hearts, the one that we have to accomplish first, such as putting food on the table. As we go deeper, the purpose can get darker. We may not know or understand. But in the deepest, darkest places the Lord waits for us to give control to him and trust him. There is light in the deepest darkest depths, like the glow of an anglerfish or an electric eel.

Go Deeper

Initially, in life, I think we see our purpose close to the surface. Needs must be met, so our purpose is to meet them. Sometimes we develop a purpose beyond ourselves as we go deeper, such as teaching our children or connecting with our spouse. Occasionally we go even deeper and commit to a cause that helps several people, such as being involved in a church ministry, volunteering in the community, or raising awareness for a charity. God’s purpose for us encompasses all levels. You know He will help you with the surface stuff. He wants to help connect you with others and help you serve others.

So what is the deep dark purpose that God has for you? Reach into the deep to discover it. Pray for the understanding to “draw it out.”
