This year, my word and goals are centered on what I treasure most.

As I review 2025 and set goals for 2026, one thing is clear to me. I did not meet my goals. Sound familiar?

Last year, I set goals for health, writing, and my walk with God, and I have to say that I missed the mark on all of them. That doesn’t mean I didn’t accomplish anything. I did, but, praise the Lord, it’s time to reset and restart. It’s a new year.

Word for 2025: Heart

Last year’s word was “heart.” I set the word “heart” because I wanted the year to reflect that my heart was on the Lord and what He had for me.

I followed my heart and stayed consistent with my writing critique groups, which have proven invaluable to me and the people that I work with. This was a goal that I aced last year and will continue this upcoming year.

I followed God’s leading on my heart when I decided to accept responsibility for the kids’ ministry at my church. However, I could be more fully invested in it. In fact, I could be more fully invested in all areas of my faith, which leads me to my new word of the year.

Word for 2026: Treasure

I have chosen “treasure” as my new word of the year. I need to remember that Jesus is my first love (Rev. 2:4), and that the Spirit in my life is my greatest treasure.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” ~Matthew 6:21

The Bible passage that jumps out most to me as I launch the word “treasure” is from Matthew 6:19–21.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

I don’t want to focus on earthly treasures that can be corrupted. As the verse says, the things many of us value on this earth can be destroyed by moths or rust, or can be stolen by thieves. Anything like this is worthless in the great scheme of things.

Sure, we need a car to get around in, but we don’t need the most expensive car with all the bells and whistles. Having that doesn’t bring us closer to the Lord. We don’t need to buy the expensive outfit, or have the latest tech, or — fill in the blank with what we spend money on that doesn’t strengthen us spiritually.

“The heart clings to collected treasure. Stored-up possessions get between me and God. Where my treasure is, there is my trust, my security, my comfort, my God.” ~Dietrich Bonhoeffer

What do we value? Should we value the movies, music, games, and sports teams as much as we do? What do we value the most in our lives?

This year, I want to treasure my Bible, my time with God, and prayer, so that my heart is completely on Him. I want that to be what I value the most. If I do this, I know that everything else that’s important in my life will fall into place.

If my treasure is the Lord, He will bless all other areas of life. And if he doesn’t, I’m still where I need to be, doing what I need to do.

“Laying up treasures in heaven will draw the heart heavenward.” ~George Muller

In 2025, I feel like I got off track and focused more on writing than my relationship and work for the Lord. So this year I want to get back on track, to refocus and reset with my real treasure in mind.

This year, with the focus on “treasure,” I’ll be exploring: our treasure in Heaven, supply of treasure, treasure in us, the treasure of wisdom, the treasure of God’s Word, desirable treasure, and hidden treasure.

That being said, I also wanted a word that would provide a visual reminder to all of us throughout the year on what we see as treasure in our lives.

My Goals for 2026

The most important goal I have is to make sure I focus on the treasure I have in the Lord. There are a few other goals I have for 2026 that reflect what I treasure: health, writing, and learning. I want to eat right, drink enough water, and maintain a healthy weight. I want to continue to edit my work and publish what I have done. I want to learn something new (which is how to self-publish) so that I can accomplish my publishing goals.

Your Goals

How did you do in 2025? What are your goals for 2026? I’d love to hear if they are similar to mine. You don’t have to try to achieve them on your own — we can hold each other accountable!
