The Treasure of God's Word
Why should we value God's Word?
My current focus is on treasuring God’s Word. I have felt God nudging me over the past several weeks, and even months, to value his word more. I argue that I do value His word, and He nudges me to value it more. He turns my thoughts to the fantasy books I read, and even the ones I write, asking me how much time I spend reading and memorizing His Word in comparison. I have to admit the answer is much less.
My son, keep my words, And treasure my commands within you. ~Proverbs 7:1

Why value God’s Word?
Commanded
The first thing we need to remember is that we are commanded to treasure God’s Word: He says, “keep” and “treasure.” Not “You should keep” or “I want you to keep.” If we do not obey God’s commands, it is sin. If we want to love and respect the Lord our God and our Savior, we should value His Word more — as if it were the greatest treasure on earth.
If the command isn’t enough, there are some other reasons why it is important to value God’s Word.
Life
Proverbs 7:2 makes it clear that if we keep God’s commands, we will live.
Keep my commands and live, and my law as the apple of your eye.
This doesn’t mean that we will automatically die if we don’t. But I do believe that life will be better in some way. Maybe it will be more meaningful. Maybe we will be more blessed. There are promises there, which bring hope, peace, and joy. If we keep God’s words — His Word, the Bible, his commands and guidelines — we will live in a way that is better than living without it.
All things
God, through His Word, through Christ, and through the Holy Spirit, provides all we need. AW Tozer said this:
The man who has God for his treasure has all things in one.
The things in this world we think we need are already given to us by God. God provides our plenty, and He provides for our needs. He strengthens, He heals. And when we think we are lacking, He teaches. With God, we have all things, even if it doesn’t always seem like it.
Others
We want people to see that we treasure the Lord and His Word. We want to be a testimony to others of Him.
I want to remain distinct and authentically Christian in whatever realm I’m in. That’s really what my aim is, for people to see I truly treasure and value Jesus and His Word. ~LeCrae
How are we to remain distinct and authentically Christian and show people Jesus if we don’t value God’s Word? It needs to be such a big part of our lives that others see it.
I recently had an opportunity to invite someone to church. The person knows virtually nothing about Christianity. But I claim to be a Christian, so she knows what I am like. Imagine if I lived in a way that did not reflect Christ. She would likely think she wanted no part of Christianity. But she showed interest in coming and checking us out. I told her we build relationships and want to “love on her.” She was open to that. I hope she comes! My point is, our lives should show how much we treasure God and His Word.
Challenges
How much do you treasure God’s Word? Do you make it a part of everyday life, and how much time do you spend reading, meditating, studying, or praying? Do you show its value to others? Does it need to be more valuable to you than it is now? What steps do you need to take to do that?
