Pleasure and Treasure

We don’t need to fear; we find pleasure in God’s treasure.

My Focus

As I continue to focus on “treasure” as my word of the year, the Lord has been showing me what that means. It means he is there for me all the time, just a whisper away, worth more than anything the world has to give. Consider this passage:

32 “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. ~Luke 12:32–34

My Students

Fear shows itself in a variety of areas.

Recently, I’ve had some anxiety regarding students at school. One of them has just been moved into foster care. His world has been turned upside down, and he acts like it in class. He doesn’t like to listen when we tell him what to do, and tells us, “No.”

Another student screams and cries when he doesn’t get his way. Thankfully, he has a one-on-one with him now, but we still have to deal with the random loud noises.

Two other students in my class — girls — get frustrated with each other, yell at each other, cry, and pout.

My Feelings

My fear and anxiety with these students is that I’m not good enough to deal with them. I’m not a good enough teacher, and I don’t have the ability that I need.

But God gives me the ability and is right there with me. I was reminded by another person that He answers prayers, even the smallest prayer, such as “Lord, calm this student.”

Pleasure and Treasure

We don’t have to fear. God wants to give us the kingdom, and his treasure does not fail. It includes those little moments when we need to focus on God instead of the circumstances around us.

Where your pleasure is, there is your treasure: where your treasure, there your heart; where your heart, there your happiness ~ Saint Augustine

We can try to find happiness in the things around us, but those things won’t sustain us. If the Lord is our pleasure, we find that we need nothing else. He is the most precious thing, our heart rests in Him, and we feel no anxiety or fear. He is our happiness and our joy. Nothing else will provide that same feeling.

Challenge

My challenge to you is to ask yourself: What is it that brings you pleasure? What is it you value more than anything else? Is it God you’ve put your faith and trust in, or something else?
